A Life Creative
Episode 48, Piecing it Together, 2026
James Gallagher's path to becoming a full-time artist in the medium of collage had a few starts, spurts and stops over the years, interrupted and sometimes enhanced by various professional, economic and life events.
You wouldn't think a divorce and the pandemic would lead to positive outcomes in art but James shares how difficult times led to soul searching where art became a sort of therapy. His self-reflection was observable in his collages and through this more personal way of creating he became connected with, and recognized in, the world of collagists.
He's known as a curator and collaborator, as well as a portraitist and an educator - hosting live collage events and guiding non-artists to unlock something special with paper and cutting tools.

The Weird Show
Episode 1 / Season 2, 2021
James Gallagher is one of the reasons we do what we do. We owe this guy so much. He was one the few artists in the late 90s and early 2000’s who championed collage in a time that the medium was far from being relevant or popular.
His work showed many of us that collage, made with a contemporary mindset, was as exciting and bold and any other medium could be. James’ curatorial work carried out in the late 2000’s and early 10s took collage to a new level. He showcased a selection of artists from around the world working in new and refreshing ways that inspired the collage renaissance that arrived just few years after.
He, in many ways, started all this, and we are glad we finally got to talk to him about everything.
